Hey there! Spoke patterns can be tricky, but here is a foolproof method most of us use to get a perfect, wrinkle-free fit:
The Cling Wrap & Tape Trick
• Wrap the spoke area in plastic kitchen wrap first. This stops the tape from bonding to the foam and stretching out when removed.
• Layer high-quality masking tape over the wrap. For extra precision, add a layer of duct tape on top to create a stiff shell that holds its shape.
• Use a fine marker to draw your seam lines and a few cross-marks (hash marks) for alignment.
• Carefully cut along the lines, peel the tape off, and stick it onto heavy paper.
• Make small relief slits on the curved edges so the template can lay completely flat. Trace it and add your 3-5mm seam allowance.
Two Golden Rules for Success
• Under-size it: Leather stretches. Reduce your final pattern width by 3-5% (about 2-4mm). You want to really pull the leather under tension to close the seam—this is what eliminates wrinkles around the spokes.
• Skive the edges: Always shave down the leather edges that tuck behind the spokes or under the plastic trim, otherwise the factory trim won't snap back into place.
