Automotive upholstery

Hi,
I am a beginner so I apologise if I ask a silly question.

I am attempting to re-uphoster my car seats and, there is, what I think is called back tacking (it is cardboard/fibre) on the old covers which is used to secure the fabric to the frame. It is nearly an inch thick and I am finding it difficult to source more for the new covers. Am I calling it the wrong name or us there a different product that is used now.

Thank you for your help.

Helen

I’ve never seen it used on seats, but what you’re referring to is just called the tack strip. Sometimes a cardboard material, sometimes a cork material and more modern and for convertible tops is a plastic/rubber type. Can you post a picture?

Sounds like an import car. If it is the heavy cardboard that gets turned under and hooks into a metal channel, there is what is called Package shelf material, and door panel material, that is even thicker. I hope you have a machine that will handle it.

Hello,

Thank you for the replies. I have attached a picture below.
Yes Mr B, that is exactly how the fabric is attached. I will have a look for package shelf material. Thanks for the info.

Thank you

Hello

I have had no luck finding the product that was recommended. I have thought about removing the original and reusing it, or can you recommend an alternative? It isn't an import car as such, it's an 80's VW.

Thank you
Helen

Hi @Lensbells Welcome to the forum!!!
Mr.B is right. That's probably something you will have to make. If it is still in decent shape you will be fine to reuse it. If not I would try using panel board
https://www.perfectfit.com/15347/Chipbo ... stery.html

or you could try gluing 2 sheets of chip board together and cutting your pieces out of that.

Thank you John.

I think I will go down the reuse route.

Thank you for all the advice.

@Lensbells ,

Try to use the same needle holes when reusing that. I pretty much reuse or make mos of my trim pieces like that.
