Thread path on tensioner

I have never seen a posting or any information of the thread path through a thread tensioner on a industrial machine. Obviously if goes between the two discs of the thread tensioner but does it stay on the outside just between where the taper of the discs meet or does it go inward between the flat portion of the tensioner.
Hopefully my question makes sence.
Thanks,

It will go between the two discs, dialing up or down will result in the tension setting. When you life the foot, the two discs will separate a tiny bit to allow you to easily pull the thread to end your stitch so even if you kept it to the outside, once you lift the foot it would be pulled between.

I consider those cartridge style tensioners as a consumable. The springs aren't so stout and break from time to time. Good idea to have an extra on hand
