Singer 211G156 Stitch Length Question/Problem

I bought this machine 20+ years ago to reupholster my boat, which I did. Now I'm dusting it off to make new Jeep seats and maybe other car upholstery.

I do understand how to change the stitch length by pushing the button and turning the wheel. I can change it from "just sew in one spot and move nothing" all the way to "supposedly 5 stitches per inch" (the max). However, since I have owned it, when dialed to 5 stitches per inch, it has always sewed about 10 stitches per inch.

Something is obviously out of whack. I have downloaded the service manual. I'm a mechanical person and don't mind working on it and have lots of tools. I'm just not sure what needs adjusting. I've pored over the manual. Is it as simple as I need to increase the pressure foot pressure???? Or is it a problem with the feed drive eccentric???? Or is it a problem with the needle bar rock frame adjustment???? Not sure what to do. Any suggestions are welcome! I hate to just start adjusting things that might be fine and I'm screwing them up.

If you don't get an answer here on this great forum, may I suggest you post your question in the leather sewing machines section of www.leatherworker.net ? There is incredible technical help available there from the members.

Good luck!

Tip your machine back and see if you have this adjustment underneath

If yours doesn't look like that then the adjustment will be on top where the main shaft connects to the reverse assembly. I will try to find illustrations on that style too

The unlabeled arrows are just oiling points.

Sorry, got ahead of myself there. I should first ask if yoyr reverse stitches are longer than the forward? Helps to know that when you take length away from the reverse, it should inversely add it to forward length

On my 111w155, I was having stitch length issues when something was binding and causing the presser foot to not fully drop to hold the material from moving. In my case it was the thread tension release guide. Try sewing on a piece of paper without any thread and see if you are get the spacing per stroke, and if the presser foot is actually holding the paper from moving as you go through the cycle.
