Welting foot size

I understand the listed size of a welting foot is for the raw welt cord. Is that correct? If you are sewing using 1/8" welt cord with vinyl wrapping over the welt cord plus two layers of vinyl in my opinion the 1/8" welting foot is now too small. In such a case I would use a 1/4" (6.0 or 6.5 mm) welting foot when actually sewing.
Is this correct? If I try to use a 1/8" foot it's way too small and walks all over the place.
I'm just wondering how to determine what actual foot to use. I usually simply look at the tightness of the assembled pieces of vinyl or fabric and go from there.
I haven't seen this question ever discussed. All I can find is information saying to use a welting foot according to the size of the welt cord,
Sorry if there is an obvious answer but I don't see it.
Thanks,

Pretty sure the foot is the finished size, welt and vinyl. If you shop welt, it's sold in 32nds, welting foots are not.

That makes sense. Actually I trial fit the pieces and see which welting foot fits the best. Maybe I'll start keeping track and make up a chart from my observation.
Right now I know that when using 1/8" welt cord and 4 layers of vinyl I use a 1/4" (6.0 or 6.5 mm) welt foot set.
Thanks,

3/16th is the foot you are looking for.

Its been discussed a few times on here in the past. Its a good question.
My answer is always that I recommend having 3/16" and 1/4" welt feet at a minimum. 1/8" is nice to have as well. Reason is it all depends on the thickness of the material and how soft or rigid the material is. Usually 3/16 works on everything I do but I always sew a test piece to make sure Ive got the right foot on for the material I'm working with.

That being said 3/16 it what I end up using most of the time.

@Ron Henningsen , pretty much the same here I rarely use the 1/4" and when I do it just causes me troubles.
