What adhesive are you using and how long are you allowing it to dry before attaching?
On applications like that I usually use a paint brush and brush the contact cement on both surfaces %100 coverage on both parts.

@JimmieJoe ,

I am curious what you are using for adhesive too?

There was OEM adhesive on these which was very sticky and did not seem like a contact cement.
I used 3M 77 on these.

At the moment yes, I am using aerosol. I have not run into issues using them until now. I have not tried to source Landau yet.

@Jimmie Joe, A safe bet for you is SLUYTHER 470. It will allow you a load of open time and that will help your learning. It looks pretty wet when sprayed on but gets to be super tacky and bonds nicely after a good three minutes. It is very similar to Landeau that is sprayed out of a pot.

@BigRig What is the material? Is it a single color, or multi toned?

3m 77 is no good for upholstery work in opinion. I suggest using weldwood landau top contact cement. Its pretty much the standard that everyone uses and works much better than 3m 77.

@John, I think he is just using spray cans. @JimmieJoe if you are going to be doing more of this get a pot from Harbor Freight there were lots of posts on here about that look up all the threads.

@BigRig San Jose. I was going to go to Joshua Tree, but the wife was not feeling well when it was time to leave, so we decided not to go. If she is not happy, nobody else will be. @John I had 3M 77 on the truck, so that is what I had to use. I am interested in getting the Landau, just have not found a local supplier yet. Will probably have to get it from San Fransisco. I do have the Low VOC Weldwood contact cement on the truck, but have not tried to spray it yet. All of my spray guns are too expensive to run adhesive in them, I will get a $25 gun to spray the adhesive. Do you know if it works with the 3M PPS system. I use this system a lot, and all of my guns are adapted to it.

Landau cement is the way to go for sure. That being said i have tried a couple brush on adhesives. Hh-66 and sx69? I think the second was called. Not at the shop to look right now. I have had success with both. Hh-66 seems better and bonds more as it ages. I have also had struggles with it where cement would have been easier but it could have been something i did wrong. You can brush it on both surfaces let it dry, then apply the vinyl with a heat gun. Its available online in several places. Comes in a brush in can container.

Thanks. I have used HH-66 to bond vinyl to vinyl, but the application was under the sun. The vinyl would heat up and the HH-66 would soften and separate, but re-bond when it cooled down. Not sure it it is something I did or not as this was a repair and I cleaned the vinyl well, but that is my experience with HH-66. It seems fine as long as it is not in direct sun on a hot summers day.

@JimmieJoe Oh yeah... I dont think California allows Weldwood landau contact cement any more. If I were you I would get an account set up at Keyston Bros in San Francisco. They have their own brand of landau cement that I used for years in CA and never had an issue with it.
I know guys that spray glue out of the 3m PPS systems and love it. I have never found that to be needed. Ive always used the cheep harbor freight siphon feed paint gun.
