Skiving leather on budget

Anyone tried skivers like this for upholstery leather? If it works but slow - it's OK. But if it doesn't work I'd rather not spend money..

I need to take edges off to eliminate bulk but not sure I want to purchase Fortuna-style skiver.

Never used one like that before. I have seen people use the hand held ones and they look like they work well.
