Hello!

I picked up this couch for free

and began my process of re-covering it these last few weeks. However, at this point I have removed the buttons on the seat and arm, and realized they were split prong buttons... then the confusion hit. The top layer of Dacron is stapled to the frame for both the seat and the arm:

and there is this cover on the bottom between the springs and the foam of the seat (I can see the holes for the tufting through the bottom sheet).

So my question is, do I take the cushions off the seat and the arm and then re-cover them in Dacron and fabric, tuft them, and then staple the Dacron down to the frame first, then the fabric? Or can I cut through the bottom sheet and just spread the prongs while reaching between the springs (I would assume this isn't a good option)?

OR Is there some mystery 3rd option I have too little experience to think of that would solve this?

Thank you so much in advance!

tufting is not easy, measurements have to be really accurate that looks to be a 5x7 diamond pattern. take a lot of pic the prongs you will have to recover which I'm not good at . the button machine press and dies to recover the buttons are around 350.00 to get started the buttons you can buy a box 140 for 45.00 so, if its your first tufting experience , good luck Free is not always free.

The tufting was done before the seat was fixed to the frame, you will have to do a test to see if it's better to tuft it as is or remove the cushion. The button press and dies are expensive, buy pre-made buttons and let them contrast with the fabric rather than match, consider it a "design element." You can do tufting without a lot of measurement for the "perfect" look, but for leather it's best to have everything laid out, with fabric you can get away with doing one line down the middle to a chalk line on your fabric then do the rest by feel/eye. Plenty of video's on YouTube to show how to do tufting. Practice on a scrap piece of fabric or muslin a similar weight to your good fabric and don't worry about it. Best way to learn is to watch someone else then jump in and do it on cheap fabric first.
