My seiko machine was recently serviced and sews great in a straight line. Both forwards and reverse.
My issue is when performing the fwds bkwd frd stitch at the beginning and end of a run where there are maybe two or three stitches in each direction before changing direction.

On maybe 2 in 5 tries, the bobbin thread fails to remain taut, then tangles and knots. On occasion this has even broken toge top thread.

When I watch videos, it is all done at such speed, not much effort seems to go into fwd / rev changes but at my slow stich speed it just doesn’t seem happy.I’m keeping hold and tension on both threads throughout all of this.

What could be the cause / fix?

Ought to add... it only seems to be a problem when sewing scrim foam backed soft materials. Joining two leathers together seems to be no problem.

A thought... is it possible to put too much tension on those loose threads? Looking again at Johns videos he seems to hold threads down rather than keeping tension on them..

Ok.... and with some more experimenting, - if I operate the reverse layer whilst the machine is moving, it is ok 99% of the time. Are you supposed to not use the direction lever with the machine stationary?

You need to hold both threads tight with one hand when you start your seam other wise the bobbin thread will get tangled.
