Hi folks! I'm replacing the webbing on a daybed that previously had 2 inch elastic webbing underneath decorative leather straps. The webbing had sagged after about 10 years of use. I thought I'd give it a bit more life by using black and white herringbone webbing, which I was told was the strongest. But despite pulling it very tight before stapling, as soon as I lay on the daybed the webbing stretched and became loose. Is this normal? Should I be using elastic webbing instead?

Did you just pull by hand or did you use a webbing stretcher when you put it on?

It was by hand, with the end wrapped around a dowel – we thought we were pulling it as tight as it could go.
Thanks John! I've ordered one, going to pick it up and have another go on Saturday.

@Zot,
\\\there does not look like there is much elastic in your webbing if any, pull tight.

Cheers BigRig, I'm trying black and white webbing in place of the black elastic webbing that was there before, as I read it's stronger. The webbing seems more widely spaced than on a normal sofa. I'll see how it goes with a stretcher.

@Zot,
I have used some webbings and they are pretty strong so just make sure you tighten it up good and you are good to go. Now here is the question of the day, Are the staples holding it down on either end as strong as the webbing

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Was about 12 staples either end, seemed pretty good.

Thanks for the advice folks, a stretcher seemed to make all the difference! I used this type, which worked fine one-handed, though the peg broke first time and I had to replace it with a metal rod. I pre-stretched the webbing by winding it around the daybed frame and lying on it for a week. I also stapled the leather strips on top before putting any weight on the stapled webbing – I think they add a bit of support. Everything's nice and tight now!
