I was watching @John video on Youtube about sunvisor recovery on BMW and got to ask this.. I did bunch of work with glue. I used Landau Top and Trip HHR.

I tried first with spray gun (similar to what's in Youtube - bottom feed). Made some mess, lifted fabric, spraed on wrong side accidently, etc. Bottom line - didn't work very good. :grinning:

Finished project with this glue but I was brushing everything. Bought 1000 chip brushes and it worked great. Slow. But it worked for me.

Then I saw this video how he did this very precise, inside a room, without worrying about overspray, etc. Now I have million questions:

1. What spray gun should be used? Tip size?
2. What air pressure?
3. HHR glue out of gallon can says "spray ready". Is it? Or should it be diluted?
4. What to use for cleanup of a gun?
5. Is cleanup worth it for small jobs where brushing will be just as fast?

I use a cup gun with dap weldwood hhr glue. I spray it right out of the gallon can without diluting. The tip is a 1.8 or a primer gun. I’ve heard that the gravity guns don’t work. I’ve tried paint thinner. Does it work in the end, yes. Would I recommend it if it weren’t a pinch. No. Acetone works best. I think the best is acetone. As far as air pressure it seems I always adjust on the fly. If the glue has been in the pot a while I use a bit more. If it’s new less. Start around 30psi and adjust from there. Cechaflo has a good video about cleaning. He uses a gravity gun so maybe they do work.

For the brush question. It’s about 50/50 for me between brushing and spraying. Biggest factors are how lazy I am. Sometimes I don’t want to walk to the glue gun for something, and size. If it’s a large area I’ll spray it. Lazy or not lol.

This is the gun I use. https://amzn.to/2pP3tEX
PSI= 80-90
This is the glue I recommend to always use. Dap Weldwood Landau Top Contact Cement https://amzn.to/2pT3TtP
I don't clean the gun except for the pot breather hole and the face of the cup. Just leave the glue in the pot. Next time you need to use it just spray the gun on to a piece of cardboard until it sprays clean. If it wont. Dump the glue and replace with fresh glue.

Gravity feed guns will work. I just don't like them because the don't stand up on their own.

Thank you guys! I guess it all boils down to how much work you do. For me - it means cleanup every time I use it. Also after watching this video it doesn't look so bad. And I have exact same gun as John (from HF).

May try it again later.

P.S. This is exact glue I used. Went through 1.5 gallons on what I did so far.

@IvanD,

The brand plays a factor too man. I could bring you here spray one glue and you literally have 30 seconds to set that pattern on right or its sealed. I use another for other applications to give me more time to lift the fabric and reset if necessary. I really like glue.

It is same glue. DAP landwood HHR
I wait between 5 and 10 minutes before joining parts

Car was in extreme 100+ degrees heat parked for days. No issue. Only door top panels came out but it’s because of vinyl. I just scraped glue off anx reattached with special superglue

@IvanD I have set guns on the shelf for a few months and not used it. Swaped out the glue in the pot, Spayed the gun clean on to junk cardboard and good to go. Its really a mess clean the glue gun every time. Haha honestly Id rather buy a new gun for $30 than have to clean in.

Thanks guys! That will work. I will be working on this project for next month or so (?) Filling gun and leaving it will work for me. Will try that. I have exact same gun from HF with 1.8 tip.

Good point @BigRig Sealing off the pot vent will help as well when letting your gun sit.

What does 1.8 tip mean? I sprayed glue (tried a hasty cleanup, as I didn't have the right cleaner) but it's been dried on for a few days. Been thinking about buying a new gun/pot. :grin:

1.8 is the size of the fluid needle on the gun. Meaning the size of the hole for the fluid to come out of the gun is 1.8mm

I use acetone to clean mine, it turns the glue into a gum. Put the cap and tip into a cup of acetone, take the needles out and clean them . If the glue gets to a deep yellow it won't spray, it's old and thick.

Thanks, Scott. I'll give that a try. I suspect I'll dump this sprayer, as it's a screw on lid type, and I'd rather have the quarter-turn type.
