Kinda stumped here, the bar is running across the seat where I want to put an 8" diamond insert. Are these things necessary?

Hey @BigRig. What I have done in the past is fill the foam channel where the bar gets hog ringed. Fill it like you would a foam repair so that its nice and smooth and it was never there. Then when you install your cover just glue the cover to the foam with contact cement. On the back rest you will have to slip the cover on and then spray your glue through the opening on the bottom and hold the cover open so they don't touch while the glue tacks up. Make sure everything is nice and lined up where you want it when you press it into position.

I would consider using the upper bar on the head rest. Because it will be difficult to get glue all the way up there once you slide the cover on.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks John!

This really makes a lot of sense and I am really excited to start this project. I plan to go all black (All American Naugahyde) with Black Diamond stitching.
