I have looked for scrim foam to start doing my pickup seats and find they want to know what color backing is wanted. Is this to identify different weights of foam? what would I want for my seats under ultraleather ? I know that you will never see the color but wondering the difference between gray/green or pink :confused:

@hapyrdr,

Is there a tye dye option for colour? I think the vast majority of this stuff comes from one place and is imported. I may be wrong but thats what it seems.

My last project I had to buy 1/2" foam from fabricland and adhere a backing to it. By the looks of it sew foam is a headliner foam adhered to a layer of foam to give it its thickness.

Bry-Tech had sent me very decent foam and it seems like the same quality came form Albright. The foam that came from my own country was not near the density of sew foam.

For scrim foam the pink is typically considered to be the best. It usually will have a fine plastic netting for the backing.
Personally I usually use scrim foam that goes a few names ( Headliner backed scrim, t-shirt backed scrim, muslin backed scrim) I use it because I like that type of backing. The foam usually is off white to grey. I wish the pink foam came with that style backing.
The green is also good quality. Similar to the pink.

I don't recommend using the really cheep white scrim. Its pretty low quality and the netting on the back doesn't do a good job of holding the puffiness in your pleats?

@torriec I bet you have a better explanation to this question :grin:

@BigRig @John

Our sew foam comes in three sizes: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". Each of those sizes has two options: regular and firm.

The regular comes in a variety of colors. We have no control over the colors, it's whatever our supplier sends us. This also means the density varies sometimes too. It's kind of like they make it out of whatever foam they have left over.

The "firm" is always pink and always consistent in it's density and color.

Hope this answers the question!

They actually glued muslin to the foam first. Much more time consuming but people do still do it this way today.
