I’m replacing a golf cart’s upholstery. Both the backrest and seat are made up of small pieces joined together as a decorative effect. Each piece on the original cover is backed with 1/2” scrim foam. My question is, do I cut each small piece from the vinyl, then cut the same piece from the scrim foam, then stitch around the perimeter to hold the two together and then assemble them into a unit? What’s the right way to add scrim foam to small pieces? Here is a picture of my dry run with some old vinyl I had laying around.

If it were me I would be finding a way to use on piece of foam under all the vinyl pieces.

Hey @HHand Nice work!!

What I suggest is cutting out your vinyl pieces. Then lightly glue the vinyl to scrim with cheep spray can adhesive like this https://www.albrightssupply.com/ES2000- ... Click=3957
Then cut the scrim a little wider around the vinyl. Sew around the edge. Now trim the scrim foam flush.

This is a little time consuming but in my opinion its produces the best end result and keeps you edges nice and clean and easy to sew.

Thanks! I was hoping for an answer from someone like you who’s done lots of them. I thought I saw you do it that way in one of your fast time videos. Those were larger pieces. Now I know it’s the right method for small pieces too. Really appreciate it. And thanks for a forum where I feel welcome even though I’m a novice at auto upholstery.

Glad to have you here! Yup its the same on small pieces. And like @BigRig sometimes you can find ways to save time. Like you did on the white section in your picture by sewing in the pleats instead of making each pleat an individual piece.
