I'm sure everyone had heard the term and used some form of tag and bag to keep track of screws and fasteners. My spin on tag and bag is mark and tote. I prefer to purchase several multi compartment storage cases at my local home supply store to keep all my misc stuff. I put painters tape across the top of all the compartments and mark what's in the compartment as I fill them up. I like these due to the fact that they are stackable and if you get the same ones they will lock together and can be put on the shelf and not in a box. I know I would lose a bag here and there but it is harder for me to lose an entire container.

That’s what I do also. I have the type though that can sit on a bench or be screwed to a wall. It’s a plastic segmented frame with slide out plastic drawers. (Think similar time what John used to hold bobbins and things below his sewing table) like you I mark with tape and sharpie. This way reusable and more durable.
