Just a thought here. Caution is warranted when faced with sewing used carpet. That may also pertain to a horse blanket if it has not been properly cleaned. There is no way you want sand and/or grit working it's way into the mechanism of your sewing machine.

That advice is GOLD. I reused some old carpet backing on a truck seat I was doing today being cheap on my material. The amount of fine dirt that came out of that was almost enough for me to unstitch that half way through and chuck it!

Yeah the carpet seat backs are gross. Even when cutting the old stitching the table top is covered in stuff just falling out. But I never stock it cause most of the time I can reuse it when doing repairs.
