Hello Everyone! Long time, no car work. :frowning2:

I am working on the carpet for the 32 Coupe then I made the bench seat for. He purchased his own materials which consists of a nylon carpet with a poly backing. This carpet has absolutely no stretch. Steaming it just makes a puddle of water. He has the curviest transmission tunnel and I have no idea how to make this carpet work. Suggestions?

He may have brought you jute back carpet which I can see being really unpleasant to mould. I have to step out and wait for experts on carpet so am staying tuned!!

Could you make it as a long piece wrapped around the gear shift lever? Like the picture I’ll add. Or possibly 2 pieces where I added the dotted line. You’d have to bind the edge.

@cody, that is a great suggestion and if planned well could compliment the interior.

@cody. I think I'll have to do 5 or 6 pieces. No stretch at all. I just don't want it to look like rose petals. Lol. I think it would be awesome to mold in Saddle letter and dye to match but he's not receptive to that.

Its carpet, why not more cuts and more seams they are basically going to be hidden?

I would do it like Cody suggested but I would also add something to make that bump a more uniform shape that is easier to cover so that you dont have to add more seams. You can layer up closed cell foam and shape it or use Jute padding or a combo of both.

Also that is the worst when customers insist on bringing their own material. I usually will not warranty the job if they do this and that usually changes their mind.

@John, such a good bit of advice. If you are always working with a material you get to know its depedibility.

If there is no stretch at all. Possibly a way to get a pattern that you feel could work right, is to use some roll paper. It won’t stretch either and will show where you may need to make seams

Any pictures of the other material you are working with like leather. There is no reason you cannot end the carpet game at the current cuts and run foam backed leather up ? Just an idea.

I got it done. I also discovered that the carpet would stretch if it was steamed from the top side. Here's some pictures of the finished product. Customer is happy.
