Hi guys,

I'm new to doing upholstery work.

I'm just curious what are the best types of materials to use for car seats, other than vinyl and leather. I have been following the hog ring page on Instagram, and they posted a seat that a company did that was quite nice:

Someone in the comments posted a company where it was possible to buy old stock of fabric that was used in cars.

A picture of their home page here:

Looking at the picture from their website, it seems like the fabric is backed by something to maybe make it more durable? Or is that a thin layer of scrim foam already attached to the fabric? Or is it just the fabric itself that is thicker?

I'm curious on the difference between an automotive type fabric that can be used as a seat base as in the picture above, versus other types of fabric, and where does one get these types of fabric exactly other than this site in the Netherlands (shipping must be insane)?

Thanks!

Relicate leather sells tartan materials like you’re showing here. The difference for automotive vs home decor is often the weight of the fabric. Auto will be a heavy fabric so it can take more
Abuse. Also, it sometimes has a coated backing. Not sure the purpose of the coat to be honest. The biggest thing is the durability. Auto grade will just stand up better.

Thanks Cody. I wish I knew of a place that sells automotive type fabrics in Canada. I mean the patterns don't need to be from any specific car (obviously they jack the price up for that), but just something that will hold up in an automotive application...

This picture is an example of vinyl that did not last a year in your climate. I do not know what happened here but this was a seat redo less than a year ago with brand new material. Sourcing from the # I provided will ensure you get the right material for your area.

@John

Convert sheltered -35 degreess celcius to Farenheight. Add the wind chill and your just living the life here. One thing I am getting really sick of is freezing for six months of the year and everytime you turn around your shovelling snow :rage:
