I just picked up a used Juki 1541s walking foot clutch motor sewing machine. I was wondering what brand name thread to use? Also what type nylon or polyester thread and size? I watched a video with John explains the needle sizes and I believe he uses a #92 size and the brand Coats. My machine came with a needle, not sure about the size. I figure I will pick up some 18, 20 and 22. I plan on sewing automotive vinyl , leather and Alcantara suede. Nothing really heavy. Just want to buy the correct thread the first time. I seen some on eBay, but doesn’t say the brand. The thread Exchange website doesn’t sell the Coats brand. They use some other brand. What a good size amount of thread to have and color (black, white ect)

My machine needle system. 135 x 17

Are you using it on leather and vinyl? Have you ever tried Coats Brand? I think I heard that is what John uses and recommend in his videos.

I am using it on Vinyl. It is very stiff and nothing at all like Coats. Coats is soft just like factory thread and sews like a dream. I found a supplier for coats today and they still sell it but also offered A +E thread saying it was like Coats but stronger.

My machine is kinda picky and really liked the softer more flexible thread better.

@Trimmerman79 That's one nice machine. I used those a bunch. You will be very happy with it.
For thread the most important thing in my opinion is to get bonded polyester. I use size 92 for a majority of sewing. Coats is my favorite brand. The thread exchange is good also. I like them because they have hundreds of colors in all sizes. You don't have as many options with coats. 90% percent of the time you'll be sewing with black, white, or beaver. I always buy those colors in 1 pound spools. All other colors I buy in the smaller size. Dont buy thread off ebay. You never want to go cheep on thread. Its the most important part of your projects and the smallest cost on your projects. A lot of suppliers also buy coats and re-brand it under a different name. Its worth it to ask sometimes.

There is another brand of thread I have been hearing a lot about. Its supposed to be better than Coats. Amann is the brand name.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your feedback. I found a supplier on eBay that sells coats and A+E and they said it’s the same or if not better then the Coats. I just made sure it was bonded polyester #92. I ordered black and white 4oz just to try. Before I get larger quantities.

Yeah I can’t wait to start using, scored at a great price and came in good condition. Only this was missing was the thread holder pins or rods that hold the thread. Is there a good place to get just these and not the entire holder stand? What are they called so I can look them up?

I did order some from a sell off eBay just for practice. I asked them before buying if it was Coats, and if so why so cheap for 4oz size ($7.00) they said they buy leftover stock of Coats reasons they sell it cheaper. I will review it when it gets here next week. I ordered black, white and red. Could find the beaver color you mentioned in your video. Once I know and learn more about these brands ( Coats and A+E ) I will get larger quantities. Most likely I will order from the thread exchange. They where out of some of the sizes when I called. But I’m going to check back later.

Hey John, I also noticed when I was checking over the machine the oil tank looks empty. So I’m going to order a gallon of the white oil for industrial sewing machines. The manual says no.02 oil. Does this matter when I see all the oil online that’s juki brand says no.01? Here is the gallon jug I might order tonight.

BigRig wrote: Fri May 11, 2018 1:20 am Call me old but I just use 3 in 1. Trimmerman a gallon is a LOAD of oil maybe try a little less unless you have a squirt tube to fill and can store that gallon of oil
What’s 3 in1 ? I just figured the cost for a gallon is not much more then the smaller sizes. I would just store it and use a squirt tube bottle. The machine is empty now, needs oil. So is this a good kind to get?

Hey@@Trimmerman79 the no.1 oil has a lower viscosity suitable for lower temps and no.2 has a higher viscosity for warmer temps either one would be fine in my opinion. Oiled is better than no oil.

Hey @Trimmerman79 Ive never seen just the spool pins for sale but Im sure you could fab something up easily. Thats cool you found some cheep re-branded coats on ebay! Let us know how it works out.

For the oil I agree with @Bondo497 Youll probably be fine with any oil. These machines are ment to be running all day long in factories. You wont be coming anywhere near that. But If you want to be safe heres the #2 oil

3 in 1 is an old oil in a black and white steel squirt can. It is now in a plastic squirt bottle. It is just convenient as the spout fits into the little oil holes of my machine and I can squeeze a drop at a time.

I just ended up ordering a new spool stand with 4 pin thread holders.

They were out of the Coats in the black and white, so I got the sun guard bonded polyester 92 in white and black.

The oil I just went on and got the gallon. Won’t be here until end of next week. I’m just going to use this 3in1 oil until then. As you can see in the picture it’s completely empty. The Manual say to fill to the F line.

This is what I picked up at Home Depot today.

Right on! Let us know how all that works out.

It defiantly is completely empty. That machine will consume oil. So make sure you check it on occasion and drain/clean the catch tray. Might want to make sure that reservoir isn't leaking when you fill it up too.

Your gonna love that machine!
