Hi,

I'm Wayne, total newbie to upholstery. I thought I'd say hi, before asking all sorts of questions !!

I bought a second hand machine yesterday and looking to get started. The machine is a Brother DB2 B755 - 3. It's an old one, but, will do to get me going.

I am into old cars and own a couple of BMW 2002's. My sister is a seamstress and recovered the seats on one of them last year. She also made me a headlining. I got involved and absolutely loved it. So, it's my new found hobby !!! :grinning:

My cars. The red one was a DIY restoration and is more or less completed (are they ever ?). The wide arch car, is a WIP.

@B1N9S ,

Welcome to the forum sir. I am just going to tell you that even without the sewing machine you are 20 steps ahead of the game having that sister of yours.

Welcome to the forum.
Cool Bimmers. Those look like fun projects. I can see a mountain of possibilities in that wide body 2002.

Thanks guys. Yes BigRig, she's a real diamond, she's not usually into upholstery, but she's been making curtains, etc, etc, for over 30 yrs, so she can tackle most things !!

Cale - The red one, was a total ground up, resto - every panel, inc the roof !! The turbo arched car, is getting a later Z3 engine, which is almost ready to go in !

But on the sewing side of things. I have a couple of Recaros to recover and some rear seats from a 6 series to do. From looking around on here, I think I should have bought a 'walking foot' machine ? But, I am on a tight budget, so this will do to get me some practice.

Would it be worth swapping the motor to a servo type for better control, this one is very difficult to get the speed right !!

I think you should look for walking foot. Or, double check that your table fitting "standard" walking foots like Singer 111 and then you can get servo but look for walking foot head to install sooner than later

A servo motor is a must for control. I have been sewing for just over a year without one. However, I got one for Christmas and it is amazing. So much more control of the needle.

Hi Ivan.

When you say a 'walking foot head'. What do you mean ? Can you convert these machines then ?

I have seen aftermarket attachments that are so called walking foots (feet !! ), but not quite, the same. Is that what you mean, or can you convert to a full walking foot type machine ?

I mean that machine consists of table and "head". You can add servo motor to your table and use it like this. Later you can find head (different machine sold as "head only") and install on your table. As long as mounts match

Ahh !! Got ya !!

I only paid £80 GBP for this machine. So, I'll see how it goes. If I really get onto this, then I might invest in a newer walking foot machine. But it's a large investment upfront, for a total newbie. Thanks Ivan.
