Inconsistent thread tension in my experience is caused by bobbins not being wound even and tight. Make sure you bobbin winder is set up properly and you have the tension set fairly tight. Also make sure that the fingers that hold the bobbin on the winder are spread apart so that it holds the bobbin tight and doesn't spin while your winding the bobbin. Inconsistent thread tension could also be caused by The machine not being threaded correctly. Also like @Cody It could be the thread. Not highly likely but possible.

Could this maybe possibly cause the bobbins to not wind properly?

I have never wound a bobbin before but from the start it didn't feel like it was working right. You just couldn't put much tension on it.

Gonna have to wait a couple days for the new one to get here but I think we're on the right track.

Hmmm I’m no sewing tech, but I believe you found the culprit.

Thats very strange. Ive never seen a bobbin winder with a wheel like that. Possibly modified by the previous owner.

Can you post a picture of that machine? The rubber wheel resembles something I see on older sewing machines called industrial STRENGTH on e-bay. Not real industrials though.

I just zoomed in and got the number, thanks for the pic. My wife has been using my Sailrite Fabricator occasionally but would rather use a smaller machine and this is right up her ally.

They are made under a couple different names from what I've read. REX I believe is one.
Apparently Sailrite bought the standard Thompson and made some modifications to it, like the big pulley wheel, and called it the Sailrite/ Thompson.
It is a walking foot machine.

I don't think they make them anymore but I just found this one barely used on craigslist.
Check your local yacht club. Apparently they are popular with sail boaters because they have a handle you can crank to work the machine if you are at sea with no juice.

I wish that this really was my shop, But in this picture I had just finished making the Table top and was assembling the table. I then moved it into the back bedroom. I have installed a Sailrite Workhorse Motor on it. I am A disabled vet so I have a set budget, so I have to buy a little bit at a time so I still have to buy the belts, monster wheel and the posi pin and a few other items. When I finally get it finished I will start a post and share the pictures. My shop dog and her sister never let me out of their sight. They sit on a cushion near me in my sewing room.

I got my Rex about the same time I bought @John's videos (Upholstery Apprentice, and seats) and started practicing. I have attempted recovering my boat seats and discovered that I could not control the speed. So I have sit out to installing a servo motor. Had to build a table, bought a Sailrite Workhorse Servo Motor. But due to uncontrollable circumstances it will be Novembers VA check before I can finish building my Rex, But when finished I will be hoping to learn car/marine upholstery. Up till now I have been doing leather - holster, wallets and such. As well as Quilts .

Sounds like we're in the same boat, I've been mainly practicing stitch control and trying to run straight lines when I have a little spare time, I've been trying to finish the outside of dad's Pete so I can get to the inside.
