I am glad that I found this thread. Airbags are always an area of concern for me. I am also checking out the other thread that @John mentioned.Right now I am learning on older stuff that doesn't have airbags but I want to know what to do when I come across them. Also, some good, true and straight forward information would make for an awesome and lucrative video training class for the Lucky Needle. 😉

@BigRig , @LeatherJohnny @John , as for weather, I live on the central Gulf Coast just west of Pensacola, Fl. and we have extreme heat AND humidity. It kills interiors, fabrics, paint, rubber and plastics super quick.

There are not a lot of videos covering airbag seams... I I were a professional trimmer, I would be afraid of posting one, just in case someone does not do it correctly and there is a problem in an airbag deployment...

I have found a Russian Youtube user that is not afraid of showing how he reseams airbag covers. It's a pity that I do not speak Russian, as he speaks and explains A LOT in his videos!!!


I see that he uses a very weak thread that he can easily break with his hands... Once I tried a "regular" thread in my industrial sewing machine and it broke, soI'm not sure if my machine (Pfaff 1245) would be able to sew with this type of thread? Not that I'm thinking about resewing airbag seams, but just out of curiosity

I have investigated this enough and my main field is treating people for soft tissue injury and have to report on many cases that have gone to litigation. I personally wont touch a seat with an airbag even with a signed waiver/disclaimer. There are tons of boats, motorcycles and hot rods needing seats done with no lawsuit attached.

@BigRig , yes, if I worked in upholstery I would NOT touch an airbag related seat or dashboard, etc... That's why I am amazed when I see others that do it, even with waivers or disclaimers, and even show "how to's"... it's supposed (key word "supposed") that with special machinery or special threads it would not be a problem, but in my opinion it's not worth the risk...

@Cale Thanks for the vote of confidence man!! Ive considered researching this more and doing some videos. Never considered a separate training course to the subject. That's a really great idea. Haven't gotten around to it yet though because I would need to talk to a lawyer first I think.....

@BigRig Yeah man I totally understand. I shy away from airbag seams also. But the day is coming where we wont have a choice. Petty much every car comes with airbag in the seats these days. The need for repairs is just going to get bigger from here on out.

Thank you very much for the tip, and I have just tried to to it and I have not found the option to change the original language to another one... I will try other options when I have some time, but these are the options that I have, and I am only able to show or hide the Russian subtitles:

Only to let you know that I have accessed Youtube in my home computer, instead of the smartphone, and YES, it appears the option to translate the subtitles, so I can read the russian subtitles in English (or other languages), and this way I can "more or less" understand what users that speak different languages than English or Spanish!

Note: Even reading what this Russian trimmer says, I will NOT attempt to resew an airbag seat...

The Russian uses cotton thread, which is the thread that an Spanish trimmer told me that he used in these type of jobs, which is supposed to break easily with the extreme force of the airbag, but it must be tough to do a paid job that one has to guarantee in case of accident... but John and you are correct, and in the future, most jobs will require dealing with airbags

@LeatherJohnny I would never guarantee it in the case of accident. You should always get the customer to sign something that releases you from liability.

Went to youtube, and watched the airbag video. Great video. I would highly recommend subscribing to this guys channel. A wealth of information . His patterning technique for cycle seats is awesome. I got the translation to work, but it's about useless for Russian.I even slowed the video down so the translation could keep up, It didn't help . Definitely up there with Cechaflo,Mecca. and Sailrite.
