Hi everyone,
I’m planning to renew the upholstery on a chair with a flat backrest cushion. The cushion is attached to a very thin board or panel, and this entire panel is glued onto the wooden backrest. There are no screws, no clips, and no stapled fabric visible.

Is it possible to remove the thin panel without damaging the chair? Any tricks for releasing old glue?

Once the panel is off, can I simply remove the fabric and foam and staple new fabric onto the panel, or is it usually glued as well?

What kind of adhesive would you use to reattach the finished panel to the backrest?

If anyone has experience with this kind of construction, I’d really appreciate advice. Thank you!

Hello,
You can remove the panel carefully by prying it with a thin putty knife while gradually heating the glued areas with a hair dryer. Then the old glue needs to be removed, it can be scraped off or sanded with fine-grit sandpaper so the surface becomes smooth and clean for the new layer.
Next, remove the fabric and foam, and staple the new upholstery in place. For reattaching the panel, a high-quality furniture contact adhesive works best, it holds securely and evenly, just like the original. To glue the panel with the new upholstery back on, use a furniture contact adhesive. I like Titebond glue.
