I have this seat I am building for two mission chairs I am building. I have double checked all the build dimensions and I have done everything correctly. The seat frame and the place in the chair it drops into are both correct. There is a total gap, front to back, of 3/4" so 3/8" on the front and 3/8" on the back between the seat frame and the inside of the opening the seat sits into.

If you look at the layers on the seat drawing, they are all wrapped around and tacked onto the bottom of the seat frame. I don't think this is how I am supposed to build these. All these layers, even when stapled down real well will exceed 3/8".

I see how to cover the spring with the burlap and where to install the edge roll, but how far over the edge roll do I bring the other layers? The front string of the chair that is in front of the seat frame sits 1" higher than the edge of the seat frame. We plan to substitute polyester batting for the hogs hair layer.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks.
Brian

Now I'm no expert here but I don't think the design calls for so many layers side to side and I would think the extra thickness front to back would mostly end up going towards the front. I'm not sure how the cushion is held in place so you may be correct in that there isn't enough room for everything. I have seen that plan before, a mission style chair is someting that I'm adding to my bucket list after I retire so I'm kind of following this for the future.

I'm not concerned with the fit on the side should be plenty of room. I won't pull the layers down over the side all that much. There is a rectangular hole if you will in the chair base with a cleat front and back that this assembly drops down onto and sits on. Right now we're thinking of putting the burlap and edge roll on as pictured. Instead of wrapping all the layers down across the front of the seat frame, we're thinking we can just put the next layers up to the foam just on top and run it up to the edge roll without going over it. Then install the foam cotton batting muslin and fabric as pictured. If I stapled the foam like crazy to flatten down I'm hoping this will allow me enough room to fit in the space front to back. Not sure if this will work. I was hoping someone with more experience than myself could advise. thanks. Brian

We got the seat cushions complete with finished upholstery. My wife will make the back cushions for the chairs and pillow tops for the foot stools. I have material ready to make the footstools, just need to determine their finished height , cut components to length and assemble. thanks Brian

Hey Brian, sounds like you’ve put a lot of precision into your build nice work so far! The 3/4" total gap you’re seeing is pretty typical, especially if you’re layering multiple upholstery materials. When wrapping layers like burlap, batting, or fabric over the seat frame, it’s okay if they slightly exceed the 3/8" edge space the key is to taper and staple firmly underneath to maintain that snug, professional finish.

Since you’re switching to polyester batting instead of hog hair, you’ll get a softer build-up, which gives you a bit more control over the edge thickness. When covering the edge roll, bring your fabric just far enough over to smooth out the transition but not so much that it bulks up the drop-in fit usually halfway to three-quarters over the roll works perfectly.

It’s kind of like how fashion clothing designers balance structure and comfort you want firmness where it counts but flexibility for a clean, aesthetic finish. Think of it the way new statement pieces like the Taylor Swift Dog the Bounty Hunter Shirt mix bold style with subtle craftsmanship your chair should feel equally put-together and visually striking.

Your approach sounds solid just fine-tune the layering and test-fit before final stapling. Once it’s wrapped, you’ll have a seat that looks custom-tailored, not just built.
