Hi there

I'm about to buy a Pfaff 145-6B and I will also get an Pfaff 138-6 BS along for free I'm the deal. The reason is that the thread got stuck. I do believe that I can solve It. Anyhow, I'm up to reupholster  a couple of car seats and it would be great if I could use a double stich needle, the thing is that I need 6mm width but the 138-6 is a 4.5mm widht. Is it possible to just exchange the foot and the needle plate with holes for 6mm and the use a twin needle. Thought it may work since you set it up for straight stich. Or do the bobbin system differ between the 6mm and the 4.5mm machines?

Hope someone knows

For a twin needle machine, I assume you mean you want to change the gauge set.
There are 4 pieces to a single bar needle bar to change the gauge. There are 5 pieces to a split bar needle bar machine to change the gauge.

You can easily get the gauge sets from china on ebay.

You will also need to change the distance between the hooks manually.

Not sure if i am understanding correctly but have some insight and questions. Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the 138 is a lock stitch zig zag machine. The 4.5 or 6mm should be describing the width of the zig zag. Standard double needle machines have a single needle bar with a double needle set up similar to the picture you posted. The needle sets come in different widths (guages) and can be changed from one guage to another by exchanging the needle set, foot, needle plate and feed dogs. You also have to adjust the hooks according to the width of the needle guage. 2 needles require 2 hooks/bobbin assemblies, cant really adapt a single needle machine to use 2 needles. I mean it can be done on certain machine models that have the extra space for a second hook but even as a mechanic with loads of spare parts, it's not worth the time and cost to me. Hope this helps and i'm not totally off base in understanding the question.

Ok, well I'm not used to Industrial machines, but as far as I have read about 138-6 equipped with double needle it is still using one bobbin, and according to spareparts catalogs it has only one type of bobbin house. I may got this wrong but have read some where in this forum I think that it is unusual among industrial machines with this kind of double needle system while most other have two bobbins as well.

That very well may be, i certainly don't claim to be the guru regarding all things machine related. Especially pfaff, they aren't real common in my neck of the woods. Here are some manuals, i did read that a certain sub class of the 138 had an adjustment to go from 4.5mm to 6mm zig zag width. Didn't see anything about twin needles, but i didn't go real deep into it either, perhaps you'll find something there.

Hi there!
I thought it would be great to give you all an update, I can confirm that it really works to use a 6mm twin needle on my machine. I changed the presser foot, the needle plate and the bobbin case to fit 6mm widht and then it worked as a charm :relaxed:
Thanks for taking your time!
