Hello
I am changing the design on two aircraft seats; they are just flat foam vinyl covered cushions that sit on top of 1/4" wood panels that fasten to the steel tube frame.
I am wanting to add small bolsters and lumbar supports to both. My question is would I need any type of listing for the bolster and lumbar areas? If needed, could I get by with glueing the areas or is anything needed at all?
My plan is to bond the foam to the plywood panels, re-shape some and add the bolster and lumbar pieces, and cover with new vinyl. I would wrap the new vinyl around on the back sides of the wood panels and fasten. I will make patterns for the cover.
Here are two pictures of what I have in mind regarding the size of bolsters and lumbar.

Uuuugh they want the change in the foam dont they? I think the current design is great but I always look at jobs as them coming back in a few years for recovering. I advise against gluing covers down unless you are happy steaming them off and dealing with the solvents in the steam. They are happy to pay for all the extra time in design?

The plane is my own. The seat foam is in great shape. I was in a hurry to get the plane in the air after building it and just went with flat plain cushions. The top picture is most likely the design I will go with. I am assuming that if I make the seat back side panels the same contour as the seat back foam, the vinyl will hold its shape around the lumbar support, is this correct?

It should and if you are pattern making then keep adjusting and all will be good.

I am just happy it is your plane. You would have little time unless that bird is out of service.
