What foam/s are used for hatch companionway covers? From the pieces I've seen the foam generally seems to be 1/8" to 1/4" thick.

Sailrite is so informative I checked there first ... but had to email their staff with my question ... and the guy who replied obviously didn't understand what I was asking about. This was his suggested product: https://www.sailrite.com/Closed-Cell-Foam-Padding SKU: 124929-1212 I've seen that foam, it is very stiff, and some hatch covers I've seen are stiff and might use it, but it is not suitable for a companionway cover. And how weather-resistant is Polyolefin ???

Found Albright's because of this site (yay!) but the only suitable-looking foam I found there is Landau top padding foam. Thoughts for that ???

What about polyester batting? https://www.sailrite.com/Batting-83-Thick-55-Wide

Can you educate me on companionway covers? I'm assuming they are canvas or vinyl snap on covers that go over an entrance into the lower deck? If so, and you want to put in foam, can I assume you want to cover both sides of the foam with your material of choice? Landau foam would probably work since it was originally for vinyl tops on cars - and I'm just thinking in terms of weatherproofness.

Howdy, today I forgot for the 836th time to bring my camera home from my shop ... so I can't show you a pic of what everyone who has asked me for this wants. Several years ago someone wanted his foam-filled hatch cover restitched ... no big, I thought, until my machine's foot skated all over the place making the stitches look like a late-night drink tacking down the dock looking for his boat. An upholstery guy I used to work for said to crank down the foot tension hard to make straight stitches with foam ... I haven't sewn foam since, so hopefully that is the answer.

So I did an i-net search for you and found some OMG SOOO f'ing disgraceful hideous hatch covers ... without foam. Anyway, imagine two pieces of Sunbrella sandwiched with a piece of foam. And there you have it.

Disclaimer: i'm a power boat guy, blow boaters around here are just a different breed :joy: . We do similar covers on cabin cruisers regularly, i'm not understanding the significance of the foam. They appear just like the cabin door covers we make on power boats, usually for privacy or to keep the rising sun from waking you up when you're trying to sleep it off. Just want to understand the need. Sunbrella doesn't stay waterproof forever so you'll want to decide whether to use a closed cell foam, or give the water a way out with vent grommets, mesh etc. so it can dry.
