Hi John great forum just a question on seat foam I had a customer contact me about seat foam for a 1984 BMW it sounds like the foam is starting to rot is it possible to buy the foam inserts or what can you recommend?
If the foam is just going bad just in one area you can cut out the bad foam. Glue some new foam on and shape it using a small air grinder with a 3 inch 80grit sanding pad.
A lot of cars don't have foam kits available and you have to make the foam from scratch. Witch isn't cheep...
Ok here is a seat foam question. I sewed my insert into my cover thinking I would like the look of an insert and vinyl but I now want to ad foam to the whole surface of the seat cushion.
- Do I cut out scrim foam and glue it to the cushion? This cover is all sewn up so no going back and resewing a cover with more foam in it.
Now that is laying down it looks like there is too much of a drop from the insert foam to just the straight vinyl. I just wanted to smooth the look out a bit blend the foam together and after all make it more comfortable.
Oh ok that's a little difficult. If you add foam to the whole surface of the cushion you will just end up with the same look. What you can try to do is cut out pieces of scrim foam the same size as the parts of the cover you want to add more foam to. Then glue those in place over the cushion and then install the cover. You have to make sure you get everything lined up nicely. It should work though.
