Does anyone here have experience with patterning plastic? If so, would you recommend it? If not what do you prefer to use for making patterns, for mainly rounded objects including hand brake boots, when making custom patterns? I've included a link to show you what I mean by patterning plastic (in case there is a more popular term for it).

For straight line projects I will use Tyvec paper (house wrap) it’s thin, cheap and resists flexing and stretching. For curved shapes I use boat top clear, the nice part is you can see through.

I use a thin clear vinyl on everything I pattern. Its sold on a 54" wide roll and is commonly used as a cover for furniture or tables. Walmart sells it by the yard in the crafts section. Last time I bought an entire roll on line, I'll try to find were I bought it last.

Clear shrink wrap! Super cheap but it comes in pretty big rolls.

Used to use the thickest painter's plastic i could find at the hardware store. It was fine but the shrink wrap is just thicker and a much biger roll. But don't store your patterns in the attic in the summertime...might shrink on you!

I bought this material and have had good luck with it making patterns. It's reinforced so will not stretch out like regular plastic. Clear material has been helpful.

@MalcolmM , were you using the material for moldable shapes or flat? Was that material adaptable for automotive pattering?

That stuff works good for large patterns but for more intricate patterns like automotive seat covers I prefer using clear vinyl because it better imitates the actual fabric and gets you a better finished result.

I just finished 2 recliners and ottomans using the grid plastic, worked fine but is a lightweight material, heavier vinyl may be a better choice as John recommends.
