Good morning,
New member here, with a chance to purchase a machine this afternoon, but the owner does not know what it is. It came from an upholstery shop that the owner recently passed away. I am hoping to re-do the interior of my boat this Winter, and am looking for a good, useable walking foot machine to use and maybe re-sell once done.
Can anyone offer advice as to what this machine is, and would it be suitable for marine vinyl? Also, what would one expect to pay for this type machine?

Thank you in advance,
David

Looks like an Adler. Similar to a model 67 but not exact. Any stamps on where it was made? If it is an adler, it is german made i beleive. Sould be a great machine if it sews well.

David,

It looks like a PFAFF 546, a decent machine. Value could be up to ~$1000 depending upon condition, how it runs, and what it comes with. Is it a 2-needle or 1-needle?

Candidly, condition cannot be seen from that photo and only you can judge how well it runs and what it comes with.

Post a link to a giant hi-res photo.

Looks like a pfaff.. Take a picture of the plate below the thread length knob, the model number should be there. I have both a 145 and a 545. Great machines.

Thank you kindly for the input. The attached 2 photos are the only other 2 provided. The owner cannot locate a tag, and truly does not know. His Brother was the upholsterer, and recently passed.
Am i safe to assume a double-needle machine can run single with one removed?

Hopefully, you all can tell more from these 2 pics. Thanks so much.

David,

Yeah, that's a PFAFF (pronounced 'fof') and is some sort of 546. I can't really tell if it is a single or double needle. I'd have to guess that an upholstery guy would use a single. It looks to have a narrow foot, so single needed is indicated. Looking back at your first picture, it is hard to discern what is going on in the tensioner area, but it looks like a single tensioner mechanism.

Could a 2-needle be operated as a single? Sure, but it is awkward though it could be converted. While that machine is likely a single, if you choose to go for it, you ought to ask the owner to double-check for you.

As to value, I can only say what I'd do, and that reflects what is important to me. The 546 is a nice compound-feed machine. However, feet and accessories for it can be considerably more expensive than the very common Singer 111 style found on many Jukis, Consews, etc.

While I'd love to have a 546 or similar, I'm not in need, not in a hurry, and the condition is important to me. That machine's owner got every dime out of that machine; it owes him nothing. Most if its bed paint is on the underside of thousands of yards of upholstery material on couches, chairs, and car seats that have long since gone one to their great reward. It may well still be in fine operating condition (it is, after all, a PFAFF), but it is in need of a lot of TLC.

I'd offer a couple of hundred bucks for it, figuring I'd need to put a couple hundred into it to make it mine, clean it up, tune it up, etc. I'd look at it as a restoration project, and a couple of hundred bucks would be fair. To compare and contrast, you could get a fairly pristine example for about $1000.

This is an example of a fairly pristine (though overpriced a bit, but it does have a servo motor fitted) that I came across when looking for photos to share with you. https://www.ebay.com/c/643908434

David,

I think I may have been confused. It could well be that all 546 were double-needle, and it was the 545 that was single, thus this is likely a 545.

No matter, comments remain unchanged. The exact model is less important than the functionality and condition.

Thank you for all the help. As i was driving to see/buy the machine, he was loading it up to another buyer. Another example of me sitting on my hands too long.
There will be more, and one day soon i hope to be back to get advice on how to use what i buy.

Have a nice day,
David
