Hello I went to tap plastics and ordered some pvc 1/8” and when I got it home they sold me fpvc
It seems way to floppy to work as any support for door panels .

Did they sell me the wrong stuff ?

Thank you kelly

Ps John or any one where do you get 1/8” staples for the bea 71/16-421 ?
I’ve searched all the smallest I can find are 1/4” in johns video he recommends 1/8” .

One last thing

I’m working on a 1938 Oldsmobile business coupe and was wondering how you would attach panels in the trunk area like one in this pic

Thank you kelly

@Kelly, I do believe they sold you the wrong product. I think they sold you foam board and you want solid PVC. John does not normally use PVC but I do and like it a lot.

I think you will find a good staple assortment at an upholstery supply jobber. The BEA 71 gun is very popular with trimmers.

As far as mounting the panels go, Velcro is your friend. You can attach small angle brackets all kinds of ways. Double sided trim tape, epoxy cement, or panel adhesive all work. From there you can attach your panels with Velcro.

You are certainly welcome. It is good when you feel like you actually can help.

BTW, the regular PVC board can be formed with a heat gun. You must be careful not to over heat it though.

I was out working on the coupe and noticed their was these slots in the metal on the doors that has nails in it they look like Concreat nails just tack nails with twisted shank on it I’m assuming that’s is what they used to hold on the door panels and wind lace ?
I’m not sure I’m just guessing

Yup. GM did that for years. Just do away with those and use door panel clips. You will need to drill holes for them. John with "The Lucky Needle," and owner of this forum, has an excellent tutorial on building door panels. Search "The Lucky Needle" on YouTube. I think he had 3 or 4 videos covering the door panels. They are excellent!

Yea thank you
I’ve baught all the videos he has made.
I’m making rear arm rests and attaching them to the b piller and was wondering how much I should allow for the wind lace I was thanking 1/8” but not sure.
Would you know ?

With all due respect, John normally uses ABS plastic for door panels. I double checked that on his door panel course. The ABS is great, I'm sure, but I have never used it.

I would think you are in the ball park with 1/8 -3/16 for the wind-lace and the wrap around for the arm rest.

You are correct he did say abs.
So is it better to use abs then pvc ?

Now I’m wondering if I need the abs for the roof and deck lid or all abs ?
I have to meet with the manager at tap plastics tomorrow at noon pacific time

Remember, I have never used ABS so I can not give you a good comparison. I like the PVC and have never had any reason to use anything different, not to mention, I paid 22 dollars for the last 4x8 sheet I bought. I am sure the ABS is good or John would not use it.

Yea I know John wouldn’t use it if it was good.
I also read to use the pvc foam board like I have.
The pvc foam board that I have was 60 a 4x8 sheet and the solid pvc is 93 a 4x8 sheet.
The solid pvc will form the compound curves on a 1938 coupe roof and same on the trunk ?
Thank you for your help
I sent John the owner a message but some times it takes days to get a response.
I’m sure he’s busy

That is way too much for PVC. See if you have an Advanced Plastics Inc in your area. At least shop some and make sure that is the best you can do.

Thats all we have around here if I exchange all 3 sheets it’s another 106 dollors on top of the 170 I already payed.
I’m wanting to do a smooth custom head liner and not use the hanging rod style but I’m not sure yet how I’m going to do it yet I’ve looked for chip board locally and no one knows what I’m talking about so I’m probably going to have to order from albrites that John recommends I just thank shipping is going to cost on the sheets.

I just went out and looked at the fpvc their is no way that will work unless it’s supported fully on the back panel but my car has large voids where their is no metal and if someone put their arm agents it it would flex a lot

Again. shop around. Chip board is only cardboard. Normally they sell the PVC or ABS in 3m (1/8”) but it is available in thin 1m. the chip board is kind of a low end product frequently used for patterns. Stop by an auto trim shop in your area and ask them where they buy their material.

Where are you located?

I wish I could help you with material but have no knowledge of your part of the country. You can buy the glue on Amazon or Ebay. I have used Albrights and Russion upholstery supply on line but I am sure there are on line suppliers close to you. Russian is in Arkansa. I forget where Albright's is. I will be surprised if either have ABS or PVC.

One more thought. Call a couple of sign companies in your area and see what they can supply you with.
