Hello I have a 1938 Oldsmobile business coupe
I’m going to make all the panels kick, door , side panels and all other t need to make.

I’m going to use pvc board from from tap plastics I was thinking 1/8 “ then put the clips in and then glue another 1/8” over then first then foam and glue material on so the clips will be secure and not show in the material and use the same for all the ones needing panel clips to hold on and rest I was thinking 1/4 “

Went to a hobby store and baught 11 yards of faux leather they had it for half off

I was looking and it has like felt on the back side is that normal?
Here is a pic

Hard to tell but most I see are a woven material backing. This looks more like a thin cotton or fleece layers

I suggest using one layer of 1/8" ABS. Then stapling stiff canvas around the head of the clip. Then gluing down foam and sanding the foam flat where the clips are.
You will end up with an overly thick panel using 2 layers of ABS.

Its normal for some fabrics to have that backing. You see it on vinyls that are meant to be more stretchy. A lot of times the material sold at hobby stores is not meant for automotive use. You may want to check that.

I did some work with a vinyl backed with that exact felt. In my opinion I would not use it if you were looking for that seating to last at all. At least with the fabric backed bonded leather when that crap wear thin the sheet like fabric behind it will hold the seat together. That felt is just cosmetic . It does not stretch either for auto work and you cannot use adhesives properly to it.

@Gksportster , I am going to find a scrap of that material I had with that felt backing and spray glue onto it and see what the seepage is. I will just say that I would not use it for the application you want to use it for I do not think it will hold.

@Gksportster ,

There you go buddy use the marine vinyl. That other stuff is cheap and good for boxing or something. The wrinkles will go away on the marine dont worry.

The marine vinyl is not faux leather is it ?
Also big rig I’m not doing my seats with the material just door panels and kick panels and all filler panels in the trunk

No the marine vinyl is just vinyl. Honestly that felt backed faux leather vinyl is not going to smooth out for you and the adhesive qualities surface to surface are in ?

That sure is coming along. I have a 67 Chevelle that’s 10 years in and not nearly as far. Been through a couple moves with me to different homes and different states. But it’s my next project.

I just did some Buick door panels and had to get different shapes into it. I copied the factory design just new. But it’s was built up layers of waterproof panel board as a base, then glued cut out shapes of the same board and glued it to the base, to get the layers. Then glue, sewing, and tools to get into the groves. Where I wanted the panel to have a soft feel and the material not to dip between the pieces I glued on top, I cut and glued in headliner material. The headliner with the foam is the right thickness to sit flush to the panel board, and give it a soft feel.

Hey @Gksportster First off awesome project car! Thanks for sharing the pictures.
-As far as "faux leather" goes that is just a fancy marketing term to sell vinyl. All vinyl is technically Faux leather.
- The wrinkles in that marine vinyl will most likely come out if you seam it.
- To make door panels like the one in your picture. That is done by layering different pieces of ABS wrapped with different thickness of closed cell foam and then stapling them together.
It would take me days to type out this entire process. I highly suggest watching the Door panels course. It walks you through creating this exact style of custom door panels.

Ops I forgot I baught 3 yards of material when I got it they said it was marine grade vinyl but it wasn’t it was decor vinyl when I got it home it was different then the marine vinyl I had so I used it on the center console with 1/4” lando foam under it I stapled it on.
I used my 1/4” crown staples but a lot of the staples keep going through the material and I had the regulator way down low some times it wouldn’t put out a staple.
I thank my regulator is messing up
