New guy to upholstery

I’m currently trying to upholster an old school king queen seat looking for advice.
The side panels on the seat are they cut to shape?or are the flat then pulled to shape once the seat is put on?
I would think they would be cut to shape and sewed that way the other would create a lot of wrinkles?

You are correct in your thinking. You want to cut them to shape, then sew them one. A flat piece sewn i. Would look horrible and full of wrinkles.
